Distribution System Operator/Trainee - Job Description and Benefits Summary

JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY:

The purpose of this classification is to perform construction, maintenance, inspection, and repair of water distribution systems and wastewater collection systems, and to operate related equipment, in compliance with Local/State/Federal standards, guidelines and Laws.  This is a semi-entry level position involving manual field work in the water distribution and wastewater collection system, including the operation, maintenance and repair of the water and sewer lines; lift stations and related equipment.

 

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor and Maintenance Foreman who review work for conformance with established standards and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs manual work; involving construction, maintenance, inspection and repair of water distribution systems and wastewater collection system to maintain integrity of these systems and to maintain quality and sufficient volume & pressure of water provided to customers.
  • Responds to work orders involving meter installations;
  • Responds to customer complaints and work orders involving water leaks, low water pressure, complaints of sink holes, dirty water, backed up sewer complaints and/or other situations;
  • Investigates problems/complaints, identifies problems, and initiates necessary repairs; reports problems to supervisor.
  • Installs and repairs water lines.
  • Locate the water and wastewater lines.
  • Install and repair fire hydrants and canal crossings.
  • Restore sidewalks, roads and landscaping after completion of repairs.
  • Install and replace water meters.
  • Install and repair gravity wastewater mains and service laterals.
  • Repair manholes using bricks and various types of concrete mixtures.
  • Install and repair wastewater force mains and valves.
  • Operation of various gasoline and/or battery operated power tools and equipment used to repair lines.
  • Knowledge of hand tools used to make repairs.
  • Maintains necessary logs and reports
  • Performs various tasks associated with water and/or wastewater utility construction/maintenance projects as assigned by supervisor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Florida Drivers License with a clean driving record
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIPEMENTS:

  • Able to lift and/or carry plus or minus 50 pounds
  • Able to reach above shoulders with both arms, able to use both hands and fingers on both hands
  • Good vision, hearing and sense of smell
  • Able to walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, balance and stoop

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • Jobs are performed in all kinds of weather conditions
  • Jobs are often accompanied by noise, poor lighting, toxic fumes, gases, raw sewage, grease, chemicals, electricity, moving objects, confined spaces, and above or below ground
  • Work is usually performed in pairs for safety reasons.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willing to work overtime, holidays, national disaster, and weekends as requested

 

BENEFITS PACKAGE
  • Salary  - Dependent on Qualifications
  • Six month probation period
  • Typical Work Week: 40 Hours Monday – Thursday (7am-6pm Mon-Thur, 1/2 Hour Lunch)
  • Paid Bi-Weekly by Direct Deposit
  • $300 per year uniform allotment
  • Accrued Paid Time Off time on hours worked = 4 ½ weeks annually
