Water Treatment Plant Operator - Job Description and Benefits Summary
JOB DESCRIPTION
SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance and repair of water treatment facilities and systems.
SUPERVISION:
Works under the general supervision of the Water Plant Supervisor
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Employees are required to work on assigned shifts, know and work in accordance with established plant operating procedures under the supervision of a certified operator. The employee is expected to perform related tasks as required.
- Monitors the performance of all equipment, gauges and charts in the water treatment plant stations; Records statistical data concerning plant operations; Maintains, operates, repairs and replaces equipment as necessary; Charts lab test results for trend analysis and maintains accurate records of analyses and test results; evaluates data and writes reports as required.
- Operates, maintains and repairs malfunctions at the water treatment plant; repairs gauges, pumps, filters and other controls and equipment.
- Collects samples and identifies concentrations of chemical, physical or biological characteristics of water required in accordance with local, State and Federal requirements; Gathers and tests water samples for plant efficiency reports as required. Flush water lines as required, have good public relations.
- Performs quality control tests on lab equipment and lab analyses; evaluates procedures and results for accuracy and determines appropriate methods.
- Assures that plant operates within required standards.
- Trains and maintains lesser skilled operators in acceptable lab methods and procedures to assure accuracy of test results.
- Contains and disposes of hazardous wastes generated by the lab.
- Calibrates, modifies or repairs instrumentation and control equipment including recorders, flowmeter and other water monitoring equipment.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Certification as a Water Treatment Plant Operator or ability to obtain certification within 24 months after employment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Florida Drivers License with a clean driving record
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Two (2) years of experience in a water utility, or (C) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIPEMENTS:
- Able to lift and/or carry plus or minus 50 pounds
- Able to reach above shoulders with both arms, able to use both hands and fingers on both hands
- Good vision, hearing and sense of smell
- Able to walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, balance and stoop
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Jobs are performed in all kinds of weather conditions
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
- Work is usually performed in pairs for safety reasons.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Willing to work overtime, holidays, national disaster, and weekends as requested

- Six month probation period
- Typical Work Week: Four ten hour days, half hour for lunch.

- $300 per year uniform allotment
